Biography
Dr. Tyra Mitchell, PT, DPT, MHA, CLT is a Professor of Practice in Exercise Science in the SoPA Kinesiology program. Dr. Mitchell’s coursework instruction includes Introduction to Global Health, Epidemiology of Aging, Sports Medicine, Introduction to Kinesiology, Leadership, and Health Policy among other coursework within the Kinesiology department.
Dr. Mitchell has nearly 20 years of experience as a Physical Therapist and a Healthcare Leader. Dr. Mitchell is licensed to practice Physical Therapy in Louisiana and Georgia. Her practice includes adult, geriatrics, hospital, skilled nursing facilities, sports medicine, orthopedics, home health, critical care, and a host of other clinical settings.
She has a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Emory University (GA) and a Master of Health Administration from The George Washington University (DC). She is a certified lymphedema therapist. She serves as an advisory committee member to the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board and Program Chair for the Health Policy and Administration section of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Dr. Mitchell is a native of New Orleans and lives in New Orleans with her two sons and hosts of family and lifelong friends. In her leisure time, she travels with her sons and parents.
What are your favorite activities when you are not working?
Traveling; Art Museums; Cycling in Tour De Pink, Charity Bike Ride for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC).
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I would travel to Greece, Italy, and the South of France.
What is your favorite thing about SoPA?
SoPA STUDENTS! I have learned something new every semester. Our students are some of the hardest working people that I know. They are amazing in their drive to achieve more!
