Two professionals talking

Certificate in Paralegal Studies vs. General Legal Studies Degree: Which Is Right for You?

If you're exploring a future in law, understanding your study options is the first step.

Both a certificate and a degree can lead to rewarding roles in legal support, but they serve different goals depending on your background and ambitions.

At the Tulane School of Professional Advancement (SoPA), we offer both options as part of the region’s oldest ABA-approved legal studies programs. Our online-friendly, flexible curriculum is taught by practicing attorneys and paralegals, providing the professional edge that today’s legal employers expect.

In this guide, we’ll break down the differences between our two legal programs to help you choose the right path.

Certificate in Paralegal Studies

Our Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Paralegal Studies is designed specifically for those who want to build a focused legal skill set and pursue a career as a paralegal*. Rather than offering a broad education, this program zeroes in on what legal assistants need to succeed, from drafting legal documents and managing case files to understanding court procedures and ethical standards.

With a structure that blends academic instruction and real-world experience, the certificate in paralegal studies prepares you to work confidently in law firms, corporate legal departments, or public agencies. It’s a direct path into the paralegal field — professional, practical, and ABA-approved.

*Paralegals are not attorneys and may not provide legal services to the public, except as permitted by law. They work under the supervision of licensed lawyers.
