Taking an Emergency Management Career Path: What You Should Know
Over the past several years, the devastating effects of terrorism, violence, and natural disasters throughout the world have encouraged more professionals to choose an emergency management career path. While specific requirements vary, it's important to take into consideration some of the basic educational and training experience you'll need to obtain a financially and personally gratifying position in the field.
Emergency Management Education
As a general rule, emergency management careers require at least a high school diploma. However, as this is a minimum requirement, you'll likely have a wider variety of career options and a more competitive edge if you further your education. A graduate certificate or bachelor's degree in emergency management, security management, homeland security, or another relevant area of study is a great start and can open doors to gaining experience in the field. Ideally, a Master of Professional Studies in Emergency Management is recommended for the best access to the most distinctive and highest paying positions.
Recommended Training and Experience
In addition to education, employers expect that you possess an excellent command of written and verbal English language communication. Emergency management personnel are often responsible for presenting information to a wide range of audiences, and they must be able to provide details to diverse populations quickly and accurately. While a firm grasp of English communication is critical, fluency in other languages can be a beneficial skill in emergency management, as well. If you don't already work in a related career field such as medical, law enforcement, or emergency services, you should familiarize yourself with the basics of emergency response, including the Incident Command System (ICS). Check out books, volunteer, build your network, and subscribe to free professional magazines. All of these can improve your marketability.
