How to Succeed in a Virtual Interview

As the nation is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies are using video conferencing platforms like Zoom to connect with employees and recruit new staff. Virtual interviews take place remotely using video conferencing software like Google Hangouts, Zoom, or Skype. Here are some best practices that can help you ace your virtual interview.

Find an Ideal Interview Space

Limiting distractions when attending your virtual interview from home helps you provide an excellent first impression and focus on the conversation. Choose a clean, quiet, and well-lit space to ensure that your interviewer doesn't focus their attention on what is around you. If you have roommates, let them know that your quiet space will be off-limits during the time of your interview. Find a designated room for any pets to reduce the chance of distractions.

Test Your Technology

For a successful interview, you'll need a computer that meets the technical specifications of Zoom and other programs, as well as a reliable internet connection that can handle video streaming. Double-check your Wi-Fi connection, camera, and video conferencing platforms before the interview. Sign in to the video meeting the hiring manager provides at least 10 to 15 minutes before your interview is scheduled to start.

Research and Prepare

Ensure that you are ready to speak in detail about the value you will bring to the organization and how you fit in the company's mission. Practicing responses to potential interview questions can help you feel confident and comfortable. Research the company, review the job description, plan for common interview questions, and prepare relevant examples of your experience and qualifications. Use information from your research to show that hiring you would be an excellent decision.

Remain Authentic

Provide insight into who you are and let your personality shine through. Interviewers usually look for excellent culture additions to their organizations. Try to convey your confidence and personality through your body language, adaptability, and deft communication. Maintaining eye contact and smiling during the video interview can help you come across as warm and personable.

Follow Up

Plan to send a follow-up email within 24 hours of the interview. Thank the interviewer(s) and let them know that they can reach out to you if they have any further questions or feedback. Including details from the interview in your message can also show that you were attentive and engaged throughout the meeting.
