Secondary Education Coordinate Major FAQs

The secondary education coordinate major is declared alongside your primary major, and it is an undergraduate path to teacher certification in secondary education.  It is open to any student enrolled in Tulane SoPA and majoring in one of SoPA’s 10 undergraduate majors.Students who successfully completed the requirements for the secondary education coordinate major, including clinical placements and residency, are eligible to be certified secondary education teachers in the State of Louisiana.

Seeking the Secondary Education Coordinate Major will not add time to your overall undergraduate program.  The credits earned in the secondary education coordinate major are counted toward your total 120 credit requirement. By working closely with your academic advisor, you can complete your major and coordinate major, including residency,in 4 years as a full-time student.

The program is the price of a bachelor’s degree from Tulane SoPA at $596/credit hour. Many students qualify for a 20% discount, reducing the cost to $477/credit hour. However, students who commit to teach in an Orleans Parish public school for 3 years will have the tuition waived for their 11 undergraduate education courses, a savings of $19,668.

All students who earn their bachelor’s degree and commit to working in an Orleans Parish public school will earn a stipend of $5,000 during the residency year and two subsequent induction years, for a total of $15,000.

The stipends and waivers will be available to eligible students starting in January 2023.  More information will be posted in November 2022.
