Student Scholarships

The Brian and Jill Rowe Foundation Scholarships provide assistance for SoPA students who are U.S. military veterans or on active duty with the U.S. military, with preference given to those who have been injured in the line of duty.  Multiple awards are typically made.

The Granader Scholarship assists graduate students in the School of Professional Advancement who are enrolled in the education program.  Preference is given in awarding to those applicants who demonstrate financial need and who are working in education in Louisiana or the Gulf South region.

Endowed through a generous gift from the Harrah’s Foundation, these scholarships support the education of students who contribute to the diversity of Tulane’s undergraduate student body.

To be eligible, a SoPA undergraduate student must:

• Demonstrate academic merit (cumulative GPA of at least 3.4)
• Have declared a major field of study
• Have earned at least 30 credit hours through SoPA

This is a spring semester award. Award amounts vary, though $1,500 is typical. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in a single year. Recipients may reapply in subsequent years, provided that they maintain a 3.4 GPA and are continuously enrolled.

The James and Alanna Bishop Monaghan Scholarship Fund supports School of Professional Advancement undergraduate students who have an officially declared major or minor in Homeland Security Studies.

This is a fall semester award. More than one scholarship may be awarded, depending on the availability of funds. To qualify, students with the requisite major or minor must demonstrate academic merit and financial need and submit a brief application, including a personal statement. The application is posted on this page in July annually, with a submission deadline in early August. Completed application forms may be submitted via email or hand delivered to any SoPA campus location.

The Jane Lewis Wolfe Scholarship assists Tulane School of Professional Advancement undergraduate, degree-seeking students who are in financial need.

The Louis E. Barrilleaux Scholarships are funded by the Davenport Family Fund, an endowed fund created through the generosity of the late Joseph W. Davenport, Jr., SoPA ’66. Davenport was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda as an undergraduate. A strong proponent of lifelong learning, Davenport subsequently earned an MBA from Loyola University and a JD from the University of Georgia. The scholarships are named in honor of the late University College Dean Louis E. Barrilleaux, who served as dean from 1981 to 1996. Additional gifts from Davenport and Barrilleaux’s friends and family and SoPA alumni continue to support the scholarship fund.

To be eligible, students must be continuing members of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society for part-time college students, or newly invited to join ASL. Number and amount of scholarships awarded varies each year, with the average award totaling $1,000. Recipients will be notified via their Tulane email addresses. Scholarship funds will be posted to the recipient’s Tulane account. Overall academic merit, earned credit hours at School of Professional Advancement, and the quality of each applicant’s written personal statement are factored into the selection committee’s decision.

This is a spring semester award. A brief application form is required.

TUMB merit scholarship awards are granted to participating members of the band, regardless of academic major. Awards vary, though they generally cover tuition charges for band course enrollment.  Awards renew as the student remains fully participating and is in good standing with the university. Marching Band Scholarships are available to incoming freshmen, regardless of academic major.  Additional scholarship money may be available based on quality of audition and instrumentation needed for the TUMB.  These awards are granted through the recruitment process with the Director of Bands.  Awards renew automatically every year that the student remains enrolled in the band course and is in good standing with the university.

Tulane Marching Band Scholarships are partial scholarships. Students may not receive a Marching Band Scholarship in any amount exceeding the student's financial aid Cost of Attendance less all other financial aid.

General Renewal Conditions

The scholarships may be renewed each year provided the student satisfies band service requirements, maintains at least a 2.300 cumulative grade point average and continuous enrollment as an undergraduate.  Students with non-continuous enrollment may be considered for the scholarship in subsequent terms depending on funds available.

The May Allen Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship is awarded to graduate students enrolled in education coursework through Tulane School of Professional Advancement. Multiple recipients may be selected for this award. Deadline falls in early August each year.

The Rear Admiral Charles R. “Chuck” McGrail Memorial Scholarship Fund is named for a 1957 Naval Academy graduate, who served with distinction in the U.S. Navy for over 33 years. He spent most of his early career as a fighter pilot flying from carriers deployed to the western Pacific during the Vietnam war. In his later career, he commanded helicopter and aircraft carriers and a carrier battle group and served in various staff positions of significant responsibility.

After retirement, he remained deeply engaged in national security, civic service, and mentorship. Those who knew him remember a man of deep moral clarity and selfless leadership—someone who embodied the ideal of servant-leader in every season of life.

The McGrail Scholarship honors that legacy by supporting active duty, reserve, National Guard, and honorably discharged veteran students from any U.S. uniformed service. The $45,000 fund provides financial assistance over five years for students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies through Tulane’s SoPA programs, which are tailored for working adults, nontraditional students, and those advancing their careers while serving their country.

In addition to the McGrail Scholarship, Tulane offers a 20% tuition discount to eligible military students—making this one of the most accessible and supportive programs for service members transitioning to civilian life or pursuing advancement while still in uniform.

The Osher Re-entry Scholarships, endowed by a $1,000,000 gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation, provide tuition assistance for adult students re-entering higher education. Multiple awards are available.

To be eligible for the Osher Re-entry Scholarships, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled, part-time students in the School of Professional Advancement between the ages of 25 and 50
• Be pursuing his/her first bachelor’s degree
• Have a cumulative interruption of at least 5 years in their pursuit of higher education
• Have earned at least 9 credit hours at SoPA but not more than 40 credit hours total (including transfer credit)
• Demonstrate financial need
• Submit a complete application, including required tax forms

The Osher Re-entry Scholarships are awarded primarily in fall and spring semesters. When necessary, a summer deadline will be announced. For the fall awards, an application will be posted here in July, with a deadline in early August; spring applications are made available in November with a deadline in early January.

Undergraduate Scholarship & Discount 
$3,000 PTK Undergraduate Gap Scholarship

Tulane SoPA’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society scholarship helps fill the gap between tuition and mandatory fees, and awarded financial aid. It can pay for tuition and eligible fee-related expenses at Tulane, and is calculated after all other scholarships, discounts, gifts and financial aid for which a student is eligible to offset tuition and mandatory fees have been accounted.

The scholarship is for up to $1,500 per semester to Tulane SoPA, or $3,000 a year, for those who meet the following criteria:

• Were an active PTK member in good standing at the time of graduation, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.
• Have completed a FAFSA and listed Tulane University as a recipient of FAFSA data.

In order to maintain the scholarship, you must be in good academic standing and enroll in at least 12 credits in the fall and spring semester each year.

To begin to receive the scholarship, apply for admission to Tulane SoPA and complete the PTK Scholarship Application, submitting it, with a copy of your PTK membership certificate, as directed on the application. Tulane’s Office of Financial Aid will include the scholarship in your financial aid package each semester you complete the PTK Scholarship Application and are eligible to receive the scholarship.

20% Discount

All PTK students are eligible for a 20% discount on tuition. PTK members must fill out the discount form in addition to the scholarship form to be eligible for the discount, and provide a copy of their certificate of PTK membership. The Program of Nursing does not support the 20% tuition discount.

This spring semester scholarship award recognizes a high-achieving SoPA student. Named in memory of Elmo Waltzer (UC '54), a charter member of UC/SCS/SoPA's Alpha Sigma Lambda chapter and his wife Margaret, who were both supporters of lifelong education.  Recipients are selected based on their service to their local communities, to SoPA, or to Tulane University.

Online application is open in late fall for a spring award.  Current application deadline is by midnight on January 4, 2026.
