Biography
Dr. Sukari Ivester is Professor of Practice in Humanities and Social Sciences at SoPA. Her courses include: Urban Space, Place, and Inequality; Health, Medicine and Society; Sociology of Travel and Tourism; and Social Justice, Inequality, and Activism in Contemporary Brazil.
Dr. Ivester has taught previously at the University of Chicago, California State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Following the completion of her PhD, Dr. Ivester was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley.
With broad interests in urban planning, urban history, and the politics of resistance, Dr. Ivester’s research focuses on issues of gentrification (local and global; urban and climate). Her recent work explores the social impacts of gentrification and displacement in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Ivester’s current research focuses on gentrification and displacement in New Orleans, as well as planning for population loss in the Gulf parishes.
