Biography

Jed began his academic career at the University of Central Florida in Orlando by spending one year considering different career options, including marine science, anthropology, and engineering. He quickly realized that marine science was his passion, which led him to attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Jed attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT and earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Environmental Sciences (Biological and Physical Oceanography) in 2005. He also earned a commission as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard and still serves in this role today. His various Coast Guard duties included Deck Watch Officer onboard USCGC CONFIDENCE (WMEC-619), Diving Officer and Maritime Force Protection Team Leader at Maritime Safety and Security Team Galveston, Diving Officer at Regional Dive Locker West in San Diego, Fisheries Enforcement Intelligence Officer at Maritime Intelligence Fusion Center-Pacific (MIFC PAC), Counterintelligence Agent, and Domestic Fisheries Enforcement Chief for Coast Guard District 17 (Alaska). Jed attended Navy Dive School (NDSTC) in 2007 and graduated as a Marine Engineering Dive Officer (MEDO) followed by his two diving tours in Galveston, TX and San Diego, CA.

As part of the Coast Guard’s Marine Affairs program, Jed attended Duke University in 2011 and earned a Masters of Environmental Management (MEM), with a specialization in Coastal Environmental Management in 2013. Jed also attended University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), concentrating in Sustainable Enterprise, in 2016. Jed holds a Masters Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has taught over 100 students in various GIS courses of instruction. Jed also earned a Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal in 2016 for his work related to improving at-sea fisheries enforcement through the use of technology and better information sharing.
