Biography
Elizabeth Schiro Parent has taught theatre courses at SoPA for many years. She holds an MFA in Design from Tulane University New Orleans. She has taught theatre and designed over thirty years, receiving numerous awards for her work. Her costume designs were featured at the World Travel Gala in Manhattan.
Ms. Parent served as Costume Director/Designer of Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre for 15 seasons. She designed for Tulane and Loyola universities, Southern Repertory Theatre, Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre and more. She also has had a career in jewelry manufacturing and design, worked as creative coordinator for Chef Paul Prudhomme, assisted the entertainment director for the Republican National Convention held in New Orleans, and served as chair of the International Theatre Committee of the Southwest Theatre Association.
Ms. Parent is highly invested in her community, serving on the board of directors of The Beautiful Foundation, which provides a safe environment for the leadership development of underserved young women. She is also a board member of the American Italian Cultural Center in New Orleans and was awarded the Louisiana American Italian Woman of the Year in 2017. Ms. Parent travels to Italy frequently to reconnect with family and continue to research Italy’s contribution to the arts, and actually holds dual citizenship in the United States and Italy.
She is an active participant and supporter of the artistic community regionally and internationally. As a licensed tour guide she is active in promoting the history and
culture of New Orleans and the surrounding communities.
Ms. Parent is a native Orleanian who was married to legendary Tulane accounting professor Beau Parent for 52 years. Just like Beau, her love of teaching continues to inspire her.
What advice would you give to someone who's considering finishing their degree, or starting for the first time as an adult?
My advice would be ....to give yourself the gift of learning. As an adult, you will find such joy in the process of learning. SOPA is such a wonderful opportunity to expand your world.
What is the best advice you've ever received?
Don't settle for mediocrity! Aim high!
What are your favorite activities when you are not working?
When not working I love to swim, read and travel.
