Mary Mittlelee McCall is the Assistant Director of Online Learning for Mississippi College in Clinton, MS, where she also teaches undergraduate English courses and graduate educational technology courses. Dr. McCall began teaching at SoPA in 2011, and has taught a variety of courses, both at the Biloxi campus and online. She currently teaches Business Report Writing online.
A first-generation college graduate and lifelong learner, Dr. McCall earned her Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Development from the University of South Alabama at the age of 59. A native of Mississippi, she earned her B.S. and M.S. in English from the University of Southern Mississippi. She began her professional career as a technical writer for a pulp mill start-up, a position from which she launched a 20+ year career in the pulp and paper industry, holding management positions in the areas of customer service, supply chain, sales, and manufacturing with Fortune 500 companies in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Upon deciding to return to education, she taught high school English for three years before undertaking her doctoral studies. Dr. McCall created an original online course designed to influence young adult driver safety and formulated a research plan to study its effects for her dissertation entitled “The Effects of Choice Theory and Verbal Self-Guidance Instruction on Young Adult Drivers' Locus of Control, Safe Driving Intentions, and Course Satisfaction.” She continues her research interest in designing effective online instruction and is a frequent presenter at regional and national conferences. Dr. McCall is also a certified peer reviewer with the Quality Matters, a national benchmarking organization for online instruction.
An avid birdwatcher, Dr. McCall has 386 species on her life list, many of which she added while enjoying her other hobby, travel. She has found an interesting way to combine her four passions: teaching, technology, travel, and birding. On any given weekend, she is likely to be found either at her home office grading submissions on one computer screen while sneaking a peek at a cruise port live cam or a wild bird live cam on a second screen, or she’s grading papers from the deck of a cruise ship or a lookout in a wildlife area with her trusty hotspot up and running!
