
Biography
Dr. Sean McCarthy is an adjunct professor within the Tulane University School of Professional Advancement (SoPA) and teaches CPST-7250 Software Development Methods. Dr. McCarthy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2010. He has spent his professional career at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Stennis Space Center, MS, where he works primarily with satellite imagery to study the ocean. He started as a post-doctoral fellow workings towards developing ensemble methods to estimate uncertainties in remotely-sensed bio-optical properties, and in 2012 he moved from his post-doctoral fellowship to a permanent federal position. Throughout his tenure at NRL, he has published in academic journals, as well as presented at conferences around the world. He has collaborated with various organizations including NASA and local high schools as part of a student outreach program. His current research interests include exploring the potential use of nanosatellite imagery in Naval operations, as well as automatic detection of ocean features. He has served as the project lead for multiple projects during his tenure at NRL, and he has been a member of an Agile/Scrum team for multiple projects. Dr. McCarthy is taking the software methodology concepts he has learned and used over the years at NRL and teaching and implementing them in the CPST-7250 Software Development Methods course.
