Dr. Chanel M. Payne, is a native of New Orleans, educator, community servant, and business owner. She is a graduate of Marion Abramson Senior High School "The New Orleans East High School," Class of 1993. Dr. Payne earned her Ed.D. and M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Texas Southern University and a B.A. in Print Journalism and Alternative Certification from Southern University at New Orleans. She is a certified, highly-qualified, and successful educator in Louisiana and Texas.
Dr. Payne's diverse career in education spans more than 15 years to include Early Childhood, K-12, Higher Education, and Education Consulting. Most of her experience has been in K-12 as a teacher, literacy specialist, instructional coach, master teacher, and school leader. Additionally, she served as an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education in the College of Education and Human Development at Southern University at New Orleans. Her research interests include: school discipline, the school-to-prison pipeline, and student engagement.
Currently, Dr. Payne is the owner/lead academic consultant at CMP Educational Consulting Services, a local small business and educational tool for K-12 students and educators in the Greater New Orleans area. Through her business, Dr. Payne has contributed to the academic success of more than 350 children in the Greater New Orleans area. In an effort to expand her impact on education, Dr. Payne was a candidate for the Orleans Parish School Board, District 2 seat in the 2020 election cycle, where pushed the incumbent into a runoff. Additionally, Dr. Payne is focused on staying close to education, social, civic, and community issues through her board memberships with Free-dem Foundations, Inc. and OPP Reform Coalition. She is also a member of Independent Women's Organization (IWO), New Orleans Coalition, United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO), and serves as the secretary of the Louisiana Reading Association, New Orleans Chapter.
Dr. Payne resides in the Gentilly neighborhood with her daughter, Nia.
